‘Smile 2’ Aims to Revive Box Office Fortunes Amid Challenging Season

Horror sequel targets $25 million opening as industry grapples with lackluster ticket sales

The horror sequel “Smile 2” is expected to draw moviegoers back to theaters this weekend. Projections show the film may earn up to $25 million in its North American opening. That would surpass the first film’s debut of $22.6 million in 2022.

Directed by Parker Finn, “Smile 2” follows a pop star coping with disturbing events on her concert tour. Starring Naomi Scott, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Lukas Gage, early reviews praise the film’s emotional depth and ability to keep audiences engaged. However, studios are cautious about box office expectations. Recent horror sequels like “Don’t Breathe 2” and “It: Chapter Two” failed to match the openings of the originals. Paramount estimates a debut in the high teens millions for “Smile 2.”

The horror genre typically draws big crowds to theaters. But 2024 has brought challenges. In October, the highly anticipated “Joker” sequel collapsed unexpectedly. “Folie à Deux” earned just $53.3 million domestic and $165.8 million globally after two weeks, far below the first film. Last weekend’s hit “Terrifier 3” may also see a large drop, with projections of $6-7 million in its second weekend.

Nevertheless, some films are finding success. The animation “The Wild Robot” aims to hit $152 million globally by its third weekend with only a 30% decline. Meanwhile, Sean Baker’s “Anora” begins a limited release in New York and Los Angeles.

Overall box office revenues remain down compared to past years. The 2024 total so far lags 11.2% behind 2023 and 26.4% below pre-pandemic 2019 levels. With “Smile 2” and upcoming “Venom 3,” studios look to November blockbusters like “Wicked,” “Gladiator II,” and “Moana 2” to salvage the autumn season. Whether “Smile 2” ushers in a box office rebound will be closely watched this weekend.
