Marvel Studios’ new Disney+ series “Agatha: Coven of Chaos” provided crucial information about Billy Maximoff, also known as Wiccan, in a recent episode. Billy is the son of Wanda Maximoff, also called Scarlet Witch, who was last seen three years ago in the hit show “WandaVision.”
The episode explained that after Wanda’s spell collapsed in Westview, New Jersey, Billy’s soul inhabited the body of William Kaplan, a teenager who sadly died in a car accident on the day of his bar mitzvah. Show creator Jac Schaeffer simplified Billy’s complex comic book origins for television while maintaining his essence.
Joe Locke stars as Billy/William and prepared extensively for four months with a rabbi to authentically portray the bar mitzvah ceremony. Locke said taking on this role has allowed him to break barriers as one of the MCU’s prominent LGBTQ+ characters.
The episode advanced Billy’s quest to discover his true identity and find his missing twin brother, Tommy. It revealed the Department of Damage Control may play a role, connecting to the government agency seen in “Ms. Marvel.”
Schaeffer said streamlining Billy’s backstory made it more accessible for television audiences while retaining the mystery element. The show also addresses Billy’s Jewish heritage, an important characteristic from the comics.
Fan theories suggest Billy could help form the Young Avengers and may factor into the comics’ “Witches’ Road” storyline. With Locke in the role, Billy’s story offers LGBTQ+ representation and sets the stage for more revelations linking to the broader Marvel universe.
