The recent headlines surrounding Microsoft’s potential acquisition of Activision Blizzard have been nothing short of eye-catching and newsworthy. Among the revelations, we learned that Microsoft acquired Bethesda to prevent exclusive rights for Starfield on the PS5.
Additionally, other developments like DayZ 2 and Matter have emerged, alongside the commercial agreements between Activision and Sony for the Call of Duty series.
Now, the focus shifts to a new console—or more accurately, a new model of the PS5—that has been rumored for months. Whether it’s referred to as the Modular PS5, PS5 Slim, or PS5 Pro, Sony is reportedly preparing to launch an updated version of its console.
This comes on the heels of a recent promotion where Sony reduced the price of the PS5 by 100 euros, but only until July 15.
In an intriguing twist, an official Microsoft document provides further evidence that Sony is indeed preparing to release a new version of the PS5, aligning with the logical trajectory of the Sony PlayStation brand. Specifically, on page 48 of the document, Microsoft suggests that Sony is working on a PS5 Slim that could be announced as early as September, with a release planned for the end of this year.
The PS5 Slim: A Potential Redesign
It is highly likely that the PS5 Slim mentioned by Microsoft refers to the long-rumored model with a removable disc drive. If the information holds true, this new model would be thinner, smaller, and come at a reduced price compared to the current version of the PS5.
In fact, it could potentially replace the current digital edition, offering consumers a more affordable option with the same features. According to Microsoft’s report, the PS5 Slim would be priced at $399.99.
Price Points and Possibilities
If these reports prove accurate, both the new PS5 and the PS5 Digital edition would be priced the same, with the model featuring a disc drive positioned at a higher price point, set at 549.99 euros. However, it’s important to note that Sony has not officially released any information about a new PS5 model, especially for this year.
While Sony has already launched PS VR2 in 2023 and is actively working on its Project Q laptop, the release of a PS5 Slim or a model with a removable disc drive remains speculative at this point.
What Lies Ahead for Sony and the PS5?
As we eagerly await official announcements from Sony, the possibility of a PS5 Slim or a model with a removable disc drive at the end of the year appears to be a viable option. The information provided by Microsoft in its report, coupled with insights from industry insider Tom Henderson, fuels the anticipation surrounding a potential new PS5 model.
