In a significant shift for the long-running Final Fantasy series, the latest installment, Final Fantasy XVI, has made strides in attracting a younger demographic to the iconic RPG franchise. According to Takeo Kujiraoka, the DLC director for the game, their recent surveys have shown an increased engagement from players in their teens and twenties – a vital demographic that the series has historically struggled to capture.
Speaking to Push Square, Kujiraoka highlighted that while this new direction for Final Fantasy XVI may not necessarily set a precedent for future games, it has opened up new avenues for the series’ evolution. “In recent years, players of the Final Fantasy series have tended to skew towards a higher age range,” Kujiraoka noted. “However, this time, there are survey results showing that more people in their teens and 20s played Final Fantasy XVI. I think this shows that, to a certain extent, we’ve achieved one of our initial goals – to have players of all ages play the latest Final Fantasy game.”
This shift in player demographics can be attributed to the game’s divergence from the traditional RPG roots of the series, adopting a more action-oriented gameplay approach. This strategic move by Square Enix is part of the studio’s broader efforts to refresh the Final Fantasy franchise, now in its sixteenth iteration, and keep it relevant for a younger generation of gamers.
As the upcoming DLC, “The Rising Tide,” prepares to launch on April 18, Kujiraoka has further elaborated on the team’s approach. “Our concept for The Rising Tide was to approach it like an MMO expansion pack, and include all the elements that make up Final Fantasy XVI,” he said. This includes exploring a new area, encountering new quests, items, bosses, and even endgame content – all while ensuring that the DLC feels seamlessly integrated into the game’s existing world and narrative.
“For those coming back to Final Fantasy XVI for the first time in a while, it will no doubt feel like Valisthea has grown along with Clive’s story,” Kujiraoka explained. “If you’re playing Final Fantasy XVI for the first time, the overall game experience will be richer and all the more satisfying to play.”
This strategic shift towards a more action-focused gameplay and the upcoming DLC expansion aligns with earlier comments from producer Naoki Yoshida, who noted a growing disinterest in turn-based systems among younger gamers. Their feedback has been instrumental in shaping the direction of the Final Fantasy series, as the team at Square Enix continues to find new ways to engage both long-time fans and a new generation of players.
As Final Fantasy XVI prepares to expand its world and lore with “The Rising Tide,” it’s clear that the series is evolving to meet the changing preferences of the gaming landscape, all while maintaining the iconic elements that have made Final Fantasy a beloved franchise for decades.
