The upcoming “Gladiator 2” has been making waves in Hollywood, not least due to the physical transformation of its star, Paul Mescal. The 28-year-old actor, known for his roles in “Normal People” and “Aftersun,” has undergone a significant change in preparation for his role as Lucius Verus in Ridley Scott’s long-awaited sequel to the 2000 Oscar-winning epic.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Mescal shed light on his approach to bulking up for the role. “I just wanted to be big and strong and look like somebody who can cause a bit of damage when shit hits the fan,” he explained.
The actor emphasized that his goal was not to achieve a perfect aesthetic, but rather to embody the strength and presence of a warrior. “I think also, sometimes, one could, in striving for that perfect look, end up looking more like an underwear model than a warrior,” Mescal added.
The transformation, according to Mescal, was as much psychological as it was physical. “Muscles start to grow, and that can be deemed aesthetic in certain capacities, but there is something about feeling strong in your body that elicits just a different feeling,” he said. “You carry yourself differently. It has an impact on you psychologically in a way that is useful for the film.”
Mescal’s co-star, Pedro Pascal, has been equally impressed by the young actor’s dedication. In a separate interview, Pascal jokingly referred to Mescal as “Brick Wall Paul,” adding, “I would rather be thrown from a building than have to fight him again.” Pascal, no stranger to on-screen combat himself, admitted that working alongside Mescal has been a significant motivator in pushing his own physical limits for the film.
