Streaming giant Netflix has started production on a movie adaptation of the popular crime drama Peaky Blinders. The show’s creator Steven Knight will direct the film, reprising his role from the television series. Series star Cillian Murphy will return as Tommy Shelby, sharing a photo from the set with Knight marking the start of filming.
Peaky Blinders debuted on BBC Two in 2013, following the Shelby crime family in 1920s Birmingham, England. The show explored the family’s criminal activities against the backdrop of major historical events. It built a large global fanbase through BBC and Netflix broadcasts over six seasons until concluding earlier this year. Knight had long hinted at continuation as a film.
Few plot details have been released, though Knight said the story will be set in the 1940s during World War II. This significant time jump will present fresh challenges for the Shelby family as they operate during wartime. Tom Harper, known for movies like The Aeronauts, will direct the anticipated feature. Murphy recently won an Oscar for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and has demonstrated a commitment to impactful roles.

Rising stars Barry Keoghan and Rebecca Ferguson have joined the ensemble cast. Keoghan and Ferguson will bring new characters to the established Peaky Blinders world and roster of talented actors. As production commences, fans eagerly await more clues about how the film will expand the gripping story launched by the TV program’s blend of history, crime drama and family conflicts.
Murphy said making the movie is “one for the fans.” His dedication to reprising Tommy Shelby along with his Oscar win signal confidence in Knight’s vision. Fans can also expect to see Murphy in the November release Small Things Like These, tackling a challenging subject around Ireland’s former unwed mother homes. For now, the cameras have started rolling on the next chapter in the saga of the Shelby family, poised to thrill audiences on an epic new cinematic scale.
