Superman and Lex Luthor will reluctantly align in “Man of Tomorrow,” the next chapter in DC’s relaunched film universe, writer-director James Gunn said in a new interview, describing a plot in which the longtime foes “have to work together to a certain degree” against a larger threat. Gunn also indicated cameras are expected to roll “in April or so,” with the film dated for July 9, 2027, two years after this summer’s hit “Superman.”
The sequel’s title and date were unveiled last week via official channels with artwork pairing David Corenswet’s Superman and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, echoing the uneasy alliance Gunn now says will anchor the film. The art features Luthor in his classic green-and-purple warsuit, a visual that fueled immediate speculation about how the partnership might form.
Gunn’s remarks arrive as he continues to stitch together the studio’s cross-platform story plan. He recently labeled “Peacemaker” Season 2 a “prequel” to “Man of Tomorrow,” framing the series as a narrative runway for the film and noting the sequel’s script is complete and undergoing revisions.
Positioned as a follow-up rather than a traditional numbered sequel, “Man of Tomorrow” is expected to bring back key players introduced in “Superman,” with casting confirmations to be detailed closer to production. Trade and studio materials place principal photography in 2026, aligning with Gunn’s comment about a spring start.
The project extends DC’s “Super-Family” push across consecutive years: “Supergirl” arrives in 2026, followed by “Man of Tomorrow” in 2027, as the studio maps an interconnected slate across film and television. Gunn’s emphasis on the uneasy dynamic between Clark Kent and Lex Luthor signals a character-driven approach even as the sequel scales up its central threat.
