Jennifer Garner said missing out on a coveted role in “The West Wing” sent her on a solitary retreat to Palm Springs, a rejection she has called the most painful setback of her early career, just weeks before “Alias” arrived and changed everything.
Garner discussed the experience Tuesday on “Aspire With Emma Grede,” an Audacy podcast, recalling how badly she wanted the part and the grief that followed losing it. “I got down and I tested for it, and when I didn’t get it, I had to go to the desert — my first time in Palm Springs by myself — and just sit there for a couple of days,” she said, describing the aftermath as a period of mourning over losing a role on what she considered an exceptional show. Reports at the time indicated Garner had tested for Ainsley Hayes, the sharp-tongued Republican attorney on Aaron Sorkin’s NBC political drama, a part that ultimately went to actress Emily Procter.
The setback proved short-lived. Two weeks later, J.J. Abrams’ spy thriller “Alias” cast Garner as double agent Sydney Bristow, launching a five-season run on ABC that made her a star and reshaped the trajectory of her career. Reflecting on the turn of events, Garner offered a philosophy she has carried since: rejection, she said, often functions as protection in disguise.
The actor also used the podcast appearance to discuss broader lessons on resilience in Hollywood, describing how frequently actors advance deep into a casting process only to lose the role at the final stage, then have to summon the same commitment for whatever comes next. She has spoken previously about the West Wing loss as the single biggest disappointment of her early years in the industry, even as her career expanded well beyond acting. Garner now serves as Chief Brand Officer of the children’s nutrition company Once Upon a Farm and has taken on producing duties alongside acting roles, including this year’s Peacock series “The Five Star Weekend” and the limited series “The Last Thing He Told Me.”
Garner’s appearance on “Aspire” also touched on other chapters of her life, including navigating fame, finances and family following her divorce from actor Ben Affleck, with whom she co-parents three children.
