The Gilded Age finale fractures the Russells as HBO sets Season 4

HBO’s “The Gilded Age” closed its third season on August 10 with a cliffhanger that puts the Russell marriage on uncertain footing and sets up a newly ordered fourth season. In the finale, “My Mind Is Made Up,” George Russell survives an assassination attempt and, rattled by his brush with death and his daughter Gladys’s arranged union, tells Bertha he intends to leave, reframing a partnership that has anchored the series since its start.

The episode pairs the marital rupture with personal milestones. Gladys reveals she is expecting, news that collides with her parents’ split as Bertha watches part of the family depart the next morning. Elsewhere, Peggy Scott and Dr. William Kirkland become engaged after an emotionally raw public proposal at Bertha’s ball, while Marian Brook and Larry Russell cautiously patch things up on the dance floor following a broken engagement. In the Van Rhijn household, Agnes accepts a leadership post at the New York Heritage Society, a quiet win after weeks of domestic strain.

Series creator Julian Fellowes and co-writer Sonja Warfield say George’s decision flows from a season of compromises and a near-death reckoning, emphasizing that his doubts reflect a shift in values rather than a simple break. Their comments stop short of predicting divorce, pointing instead to a period-accurate possibility that powerful couples might live apart without formal separation. The writers also underline the finale’s tonal mix: a triumphal ball that ends with private heartbreak, an engagement upstaged by an unshared pregnancy, and a family in transition as adult children form their own households.

The network renewed the drama for Season 4 on July 28, citing viewership growth during Season 3 and positioning the next chapter to explore the Russells’ distance, Gladys’s new status, and the social calculus that continues to define 1880s New York. With the finale dated for August 10 and ratings momentum building week over week, the return will arrive to an audience primed by unresolved relationships and fresh power shifts across Fifth Avenue.
