James Gunn has confirmed that principal photography on “Superman: Man of Tomorrow” has officially wrapped, closing out a roughly four-month shoot and sending DC Studios’ next tentpole into post-production ahead of its July 2027 release. Gunn announced the milestone on social media, sharing behind-the-scenes photos from the set and thanking his cast and crew for what he described as a joyful production.
Filming began April 20 at Trilith Studios in Atlanta before moving to locations in the United Kingdom and Cincinnati, where the crew shot exteriors for the Hall of Justice. The shoot ran 93 days, a detail Gunn confirmed directly in response to a fan on Threads who noted it came in just one day longer than the original “Superman,” which took more than 100 days to complete in 2025.
The sequel reunites David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, with Rachel Brosnahan returning as Lois Lane. German actor Lars Eidinger joins the cast as Brainiac, marking the first time the iconic Superman villain has appeared in a live-action feature film. Gunn has described the story as centering on an uneasy alliance between Superman and Luthor as they confront a threat neither can defeat alone, calling the film “as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie” in earlier interviews.
The ensemble draws heavily from across the DC Universe’s expanding roster, including Milly Alcock reprising her Supergirl role after headlining this summer’s standalone film, Aaron Pierre making his big-screen debut as John Stewart following his turn in HBO Max’s “Lanterns,” and Xolo Maridueña returning as Blue Beetle. Also featured are Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. Adria Arjona joins in an undisclosed role that has fueled speculation she could be playing either the alien warlord Maxima or Wonder Woman, a mystery Gunn has so far declined to clarify.
Gunn used the wrap announcement to push back on recent casting speculation, dismissing some reports as inaccurate while confirming that every major role in the film had already been filled. He has also downplayed fan theories tying the plot to Darkseid or an extraction mission for Peacemaker’s Chris Smith, reaffirming that Brainiac remains the film’s central antagonist. “Man of Tomorrow” arrives in theaters July 9, 2027, positioning it as the next major chapter in Gunn’s rebuilt DC Universe following this year’s “Supergirl” and “Clayface.”
