Reba McEntire Honors Dolly Parton With a Song Written for Home

Weeks after Dolly Parton's death, Reba McEntire performed "Appalachian Memories" at the 2026 Emmys, closing a friendship that began backstage at the Grand Ole Opry in 1977.

Reba McEntire stood alone under soft light at the Peacock Theater on Monday night and sang a song her friend of nearly fifty years never got to hear performed in her honor. Dolly Parton died on August 25 at age 80, three weeks before the 78th Emmy Awards, and the ceremony set aside its usual pace for a farewell that felt less like a broadcast segment and more like a wake among family.

McEntire chose “Appalachian Memories,” a ballad Parton wrote and released in 1983 for her album “Burlap & Satin,” drawing on her father’s stories and her own roots in the Smoky Mountains. Dressed in a shimmering white gown and accompanied by piano and strings, McEntire built the performance slowly, letting her voice carry the weight rather than the arrangement. She closed by speaking directly to her late friend, telling her how much she loved her.

Sally Field introduced the tribute, drawing on her own history with Parton from the 1989 film “Steel Magnolias.” Field described a friendship that endured despite long stretches of distance, remembering Parton as sharply funny, humble and generous in ways that reached far beyond her music. She told the audience Parton had made a lasting difference in countless lives before a final image of the singer appeared on screen.

McEntire and Parton’s bond dated back to September 1977, when the two met backstage at the Grand Ole Opry. That history gave Monday’s tribute a weight beyond typical awards-show homage. Parton’s death followed a brief illness that she largely kept private.

Her sister Stella later said Parton didn’t want her struggles to color the way fans and family remembered her, and chose silence over sympathy in her final months. Public signs had surfaced quietly beforehand, including a canceled Las Vegas residency and a scrapped in-person appearance at her Dollywood theme park days before she died.

The Parton segment fit into a broader night of remembrance at the Emmys, which also honored Catherine O’Hara with her “Schitt’s Creek” castmates and featured Noah Kahan performing during the traditional In Memoriam tribute. For McEntire, currently starring on NBC’s “Happy’s Place,” the assignment carried a personal charge that set it apart from the evening’s other celebrations, turning a night built for winners into one built, briefly, around loss.
