William Shatner said he was “deeply saddened” by the death of Walter Koenig, the actor who played Ensign Pavel Chekov on the original “Star Trek,” as tributes poured in from the franchise’s surviving cast. Koenig died Sunday of natural causes at his home in North Hollywood, his representative announced. He was 90. He was one of the original series’ last surviving cast members.
Shatner posted his statement on X on Tuesday. The two shared the later seasons of the original series and the six films that followed, he wrote, though they did not know each other well away from the set. Shatner said he observed a man who loved the “Star Trek” community, one who rarely stayed behind a convention signing table and preferred to mingle with fans. He called that connection rare.
George Takei, who played Sulu, offered a closer account. He said he and Koenig met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s and stayed friends for nearly six decades, and that Koenig stood beside him and his husband, Brad, as best man when they married in 2008. Koenig turned 90 on Sept. 14, the couple’s 18th wedding anniversary. Takei closed his tribute by telling his friend to “keep navigating a steady course.”
Koenig’s career reached beyond the Russian navigator. Raised in Manhattan by Lithuanian immigrants, he joined Gene Roddenberry’s series for its second season. He reprised Chekov in all six original-cast films, and voiced President Anton Chekov on “Star Trek: Picard.” He also played the scoundrel Alfred Bester on “Babylon 5.” He wrote scripts for “Family” and “The Incredible Hulk,” and wrote the 1980 book “Chekov’s Enterprise.”
His representative stressed the fan bond. Koenig, the agent said, understood what the show meant to people and embraced the community that grew around it. A statement obtained by TVLine praised his optimism, humor and adventurous spirit. The character outlived the first actor. Anton Yelchin took over Chekov in the 2009 reboot film and its two sequels. Koenig’s version remains the one fans mention most. Funeral and memorial plans have not been announced.
