The VHS-style graininess of the prologue evokes a potent sense of nostalgia, causing your veins to pulse with fond memories of yesteryears. When a movie kickstarts with “Money for Nothing”, concludes with “Born in the USA”, and sandwiches “Sirius” by Alan Parsons somewhere in the middle, you can’t help but applaud its tasteful selection of music.
On the visual front, director Affleck doesn’t disappoint either. The office scenes are brilliantly captured, with long shots skillfully focusing on characters transitioning from one room to another. Work-related sequences are edited with such finesse and pace that there’s never a dull moment for the audience.
The painstaking craftsmanship that went into the creation of the iconic Air Jordan 1s is gloriously showcased, almost akin to art pornography. The dimly lit scenes, intimate close-ups, and the passion with which Peter Moore (Matthew Maher) speaks of working with the materials creates a truly mesmerizing spectacle.
An Overdose of Dramatic Dialogue?
If I were to critique any aspect of the film, it would be that writer Alex Convery occasionally goes overboard with the dialogues. At times, they adopt a messianic tone, treating an eighteen-year-old basketball prodigy as if he’s the savior of the world. However, considering the life-altering impact of these events on the characters in the film, the overdramatic pathos can be somewhat excused. Perhaps I’m not completely in tune with the magnitude of the occasion, but that’s a minor niggle in the grand scheme of things.
Despite its merits, “Air” runs the risk of being overlooked due to its status as an original production, unaffiliated with any well-known cinema brand. Although the names ‘Nike’ and ‘Jordan’ are universally recognized, their connection to the movie might not be as evident to the casual observer. Hence, I urge you to give “Air” a chance. Head to the cinema and immerse yourself in this cinematic triumph – it’s more than worth the ticket price.
