Bungie Faces Deadline Pressure Amid Sony Partnership Rumors

PlayStation Chairman Calls for Budget and Timeline Oversight Amid Rumors of Internal Tensions.

Signs of strain are showing in the relationship between PlayStation and Destiny developer Bungie, acquired by Sony in early 2022. In a recent earnings call, SIE chairman Hiroki Totoki praised Bungie’s creativity but called for more accountability on budgets and deadlines, fueling rumors of internal tensions.

The blockbuster acquisition last January came as a surprise, with Sony obtaining the studio behind Destiny and the original Halo for $3.6 billion. Bungie was expected to operate independently, remaining multiplatform and self-publishing. Both sides painted an optimistic picture of the deal enabling Bungie’s evolution into a multimedia studio.

However, recent reports indicate the honeymoon period may be over. Sources claim Destiny 2 revenues are falling short of projections by 45%, while active players have dropped sharply. Morale is said to be low following October layoffs, with more job cuts expected if the upcoming expansion The Final Shape underperforms upon its delayed June release.

Bungie Is Working With Sony on Various Undisclosed Projects

Against this backdrop, Totoki’s remarks during Sony’s earnings call point to simmering frustrations. While praising the talent of Bungie’s teams, he stated the need for improvement in managing expenses and meeting timelines. Totoki said he aims to encourage realizations that align teams to Sony’s business objectives.

His call for accountability suggests Bungie may have retained more independence than Sony bargained for. As SIE’s new chairman, Totoki appears intent on tighter oversight of Bungie’s operations and spending. This may include integrating the studio more deeply into Sony’s existing structure.

Bungie ruffled feathers by mishandling recent layoffs and delaying the crucial The Final Shape expansion. With Destiny 2 faltering, Bungie likely faces mounting pressure to deliver results. Totoki’s veiled warnings indicate Sony has a short leash.

Destiny 2

It remains to be seen whether creative tensions will rise as Sony asserts more control. Bungie undoubtedly values the creative freedom Sony originally promised. Both sides have incentives to make the partnership succeed.

But Totoki’s remarks confirm rumors that it hasn’t been smooth sailing behind the scenes. He appears ready to steer the ship in a new direction to avoid rocky waters ahead. How Bungie navigates potential upheaval while pushing ahead with ambitious multimedia plans will be an ongoing saga for the studio’s fans.
