Destiny 2 enthusiasts can rejoice as the game has recently released a captivating cutscene during Season of the Deep, offering answers to the three most pressing questions that have been on the minds of fans.
Who is The Witness? What is the Veil? And what is the significance of the Final Shape? With this exciting revelation, players are now more eager and prepared than ever to embark on the next chapter of this beloved franchise.
The Final Shape and Its Meaning
While we already knew that The Final Shape referred to the next Destiny 2 expansion, the recently released cutscene sheds light on the true significance of this term. The information provided in the cutscene has heightened our anticipation and excitement for what lies ahead in the Destiny 2 universe.
During Season of the Deep, Destiny 2 players have become acquainted with Commander Sloane and a colossal sea creature named Ahsa, who share an inexplicable bond. In the cutscene, Ahsa speaks through Commander Sloane, setting the stage for a revelation that unfolds before our eyes.
Unveiling the Ancient Race and the Traveler
The cutscene features multiple individuals belonging to an alien race, seemingly connected to The Witness. It is revealed that the Traveler, the monumental spherical entity embodying the power of Light, was once buried on the home planet of this enigmatic race.
The Traveler sought liberation and ushered in a Golden Age for the people, who referred to it as the Gardener. While the reference to the Gardener has been present in Destiny 2 for years, it was unclear whether it represented the same source of Light.
The Creation of the Veil and the Pursuit of Balance
During the Golden Age, the alien race developed the infamous black pyramid ships associated with The Witness, Rhulk, and Nezarec. As time went on, the people desired more structure and purpose from the Traveler, seeking guidance.
When the Traveler remained silent, they searched for the Veil, also known as the Winnower, due to its connection with the Gardener. The Veil taught them about the intricate interplay between Light and Darkness, revealing the potential for both creation and destruction.
Faced with this realization, the people believed that the chaotic nature of the Light needed to be tamed. They saw the Darkness as the antithesis of the Light and believed it could shape consciousness.
The Birth of The Witness and the Pursuit of Truth
In their pursuit of a perfect universe called The Final Shape, the people attempted to harness the power of the Darkness to control and shape the Light. However, when the Traveler abandoned them, instead of accepting defeat, the people merged themselves into one entity known as The Witness. The name originated from their belief that they had “witnessed the truth in the darkness.”
The Witness has since traversed time and space, relentlessly searching for the Traveler. As we now know, The Witness has succeeded in creating a portal on the Traveler’s surface, ultimately merging the Traveler and the Veil, as seen in the conclusion of Lightfall.
