Prepare yourself for an astonishing revelation: Baldur’s Gate 3, the upcoming epic from Larian Studios, is said to boast an astounding number of endings. In a recent conversation with Chrystal Ding, associate writing lead at Larian Studios, Fextralife delved into the depths of the game’s narrative possibilities, posing the question, “How many variations on the ending are there?”
The Astounding Figure: 17,000 Endings
To our awe, Ding revealed that Baldur’s Gate 3 contains a mind-boggling 17,000 variations on its ending. Such a staggering number joins the ranks of Larian’s other ambitious promises, including 174 hours of cinematics, 22 subclasses, and even a responsive newspaper system.
These grand claims undoubtedly ignite the flames of anticipation surrounding Baldur’s Gate 3, although it is wise to approach with tempered expectations.
Exploring the Nature of 17,000 Endings
Before envisioning 17,000 wildly diverse experiences, it’s crucial to understand that these endings may manifest in an end-game epilogue akin to the one seen in Divinity: Original Sin 2. The true depth lies in how your choices throughout the game shape this conclusion.
Speculatively speaking, if we consider ten lines of dialogue with two variations each, the possibilities become seemingly endless, resulting in bespoke cinematic sequences that offer nuanced experiences for each player.
A Herculean Undertaking and Imminent Release
The sheer magnitude of this feat cannot be understated, as Ding revealed she has dedicated six months of work to craft the myriad possibilities. The task of seamlessly weaving together a multitude of narrative threads, ensuring a cohesive experience, is no small challenge. It’s heartening to hear that your choices will be meticulously tracked, granting you a strong sense of authorship over your own story—a hallmark of exceptional CRPGs.
While players eagerly anticipate the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 on August 3, the mention of the 17,000 endings prompted a mixed response from Larian’s director of publishing, Michael Douse.
Their humorous tweet in response to the revelation suggests both excitement and trepidation at the attention garnered by this extraordinary number. The gaming community is sure to be captivated by the possibilities and indulge in fervent speculation as the release draws near.
