In a resounding victory for the pink and plastic icon, the Barbie movie has effortlessly stormed past the $1 billion mark at the box office. This astonishing feat is coupled with the intriguing fact that there’s no confirmed sequel on the immediate horizon.

While fans and critics alike are eager to know what lies next for the iconic doll, writer-director Greta Gerwig and her co-writer and real-life partner, Noah Baumbach, have not inked any contracts for a follow-up film. Yet, this hasn’t stopped the studio from attempting to entice Gerwig back for a potential continuation of the story.

Reports from The Hollywood Reporter suggest that several months before the movie’s debut, Warner Bros. attempted to initiate discussions for a potential sequel.

In a savvy move, Gerwig’s team opted to wait, deferring any agreements until after the film’s cinematic launch. This calculated choice has proven to be a fortuitous decision in light of Barbie’s monumental success on the global box office stage.

A Record-Breaking Achievement: Gerwig’s Historic Milestone

As Barbie achieves the incredible milestone of surpassing $1 billion in box office revenue, Greta Gerwig etches her name in cinematic history. Gerwig’s achievement is particularly remarkable as she becomes the first-ever female director to cross this threshold. Moreover, Barbie now claims the title of the second-highest-grossing film of the year, trailing solely behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The film stars the talented Margot Robbie as the eponymous doll, accompanied by an ensemble cast of various Barbies, portrayed by Issa Rae, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, and more.
