Recent rumors have been circulating about the potential return of iconic Marvel characters Iron Man, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., and Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson, in an upcoming Avengers film. This speculation has sparked considerable interest among fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Scarlett Johansson, in a recent interview with Today, addressed these rumors regarding the return of her character, Black Widow. She humorously remarked, “Is it like a zombie film?”
referring to Black Widow’s demise in “Avengers: Endgame.” Johansson expressed skepticism about the character’s return, noting that Black Widow’s story seemed to have reached its conclusion with her death in the film. She described the possibility of Black Widow’s return as a “miracle” and a “real Marvel miracle,” acknowledging the unlikely nature of such a development.
Openness to Future Marvel Projects
Despite her character’s apparent finality in the MCU, Johansson did not entirely dismiss the idea of returning to the Marvel universe in some capacity. She left the door open with a “who knows?” suggesting that while unlikely, a return is not entirely off the table.
Variety had reported on the possibility of Downey Jr. and Johansson returning, but clarified that Marvel “hasn’t yet committed to the idea.” This report aligns with Johansson’s previous statement in April, where she mentioned being “done” with Marvel, also reflecting on the gender imbalance in the original Avengers film.
Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, when questioned about these rumors, expressed unfamiliarity, indicating that the idea of Johansson’s return as Black Widow might be nothing more than speculation.
The Current State of Marvel Movies
The Marvels, the newest Marvel movie, was released on November 10 but had a notably slow start at the box office, the slowest in Marvel’s history. Marvel’s release schedule for 2024 currently includes just one film, “Deadpool 3.”
While Johansson may not reprise her role as Black Widow in the near future, she is actively engaged in producing a new Marvel project with Feige. Details of this project are yet to be officially announced, indicating Johansson’s continued connection with the Marvel universe.
