Vince McMahon, who founded World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), has publicly voiced concerns about a new Netflix documentary focused on his life and career. In the six-part series “Mr. McMahon,” directors interview McMahon extensively about transforming WWE into a global company. However, McMahon believes the film takes his words out of context to distort viewers’ perceptions.
The series, directed by Chris Smith, includes over 200 hours of interviews with McMahon conducted before his resignation from WWE earlier this year. It explores McMahon’s story from regional wrestling promoter to mainstream entertainment mogul. But in a social media statement, McMahon said an early cut he saw uses “editing tricks” that conflate his on-air character with his real self.
This January, a former employee named Janel Grant sued McMahon, accusing him of sexual assault and trafficking. Grant alleged McMahon forced a sexual relationship to keep her job and shared private photos of her.
McMahon’s lawyer denied the claims, saying evidence will show Grant’s accusations are “false and fabricated.” The allegations led to McMahon resigning from WWE and its parent company.
The documentary also features interviews from wrestlers like The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Triple H. According to Netflix, it examines McMahon’s controversial leadership of WWE. But McMahon worries selective clips and outdated remarks will mislead viewers about the sexual misconduct allegations against him.
As the film’s release approaches, the ongoing legal controversy continues to shadow McMahon’s historic career. While he disagrees with its portrayal, critics believe the documentary may shed new light on the allegations of abuse. Ultimately, the public will judge for themselves when “Mr. McMahon” premieres on Netflix this week.
