Actor Patrick J. Adams rose to fame playing Mike Ross in the hit legal drama “Suits,” but says it was a single scene from the show’s premiere that set his career on a new trajectory. Speaking on his podcast “Sidebar: A Suits Watch Podcast,” Adams reflected on shooting the pilot episode’s scene introducing Mike to Harvey Specter, played by Gabriel Macht.
In the pivotal scene, Mike impresses Harvey during an impromptu interview despite not having a law degree. This landed Mike his job as Harvey’s law associate, establishing the main storyline of the series. However, for Adams, the scene also launched unexpected real-life changes. “You could see my life change on camera,” Adams said on the podcast. “That’s where it really started for me. The show changed my whole career and the way I work.”
Before “Suits,” Adams had played smaller roles on various television shows. But the series, which aired from 2011 to 2019 on USA Network, brought him widespread recognition. “So many things wouldn’t have happened without the show,” Adams remarked. He credits that initial scene between Mike and Harvey for setting his successful acting path in motion.
“Suits” has found new fans on streaming platforms like Netflix and Peacock. This renewed interest led to NBC greenlighting the upcoming spinoff series “Suits: L.A.,” further showcasing Adams’ career-making performance to new audiences. While he departed the show after season seven, Adams returned for the finale season in a recurring role. Now through his podcast, Adams and co-host Sarah Rafferty offer viewers behind-the-scenes looks at the series that shaped their careers.
As “Suits” continues captivating fans years later, Adams’ reflections demonstrate how a defining role, and especially one memorable scene, can transform an actor’s journey.
