Emma D’Arcy, the actress who plays Rhaenyra Targaryen on HBO’s popular fantasy series House of the Dragon, revealed her desire for her character to be armed in the upcoming third season during a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. D’Arcy underlined that this transformation is critical as the Targaryen civil war escalates.
“I want a weapon. Like, it’s becoming absurd,” D’Arcy said. “I don’t even mind if it’s just a little dagger or a short sword.” Her request underscores Rhaenyra’s precarious position in the continuing conflict known as the Dance of the Dragons, particularly after a serious assassination attempt in the second season.
This request extends beyond basic aesthetics. Rhaenyra has been characterized as a prime target for assassination, although she lacks proper self-defense. While she commands a formidable dragon, her hand-to-hand combat abilities are substantially underdeveloped.
D’Arcy identified a notable gender disparity throughout the show. “All the men don’t have to worry about where they put their hands because they’re constantly holding the pommel of their sword,” she said, emphasizing the differences in battle representation between male and female characters.
As the third season delves deeper into the battle between Rhaenyra and her half-brother, King Aegon, the addition of a weapon for Rhaenyra could be strategically significant. Production on the new season is slated to begin in the first half of 2025, with the show set to end after its fourth season.
Equipping Rhaenyra with a weapon would improve her ability to protect herself and represent her rising agency in a hostile political context. The narrative appears to shift as Rhaenyra progresses from a passive royal to a more engaged warrior.
While the weapon’s specifications are unknown, D’Arcy’s request has resonated with fans and critics. Many see it as a natural progression for a figure embroiled in a violent political conflict.
Currently, the House of the Dragon creators have not publicly responded to D’Arcy’s proposal. However, her fervent advocacy hints that her character’s evolution may take an interesting turn in the future seasons.
