Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore has written a strong open letter in response to the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Moore’s letter condemns violence while highlighting common dissatisfaction with for-profit health insurance firms in the United States.
Moore’s comments come after the arrest of Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing Thompson. Mangione allegedly invoked Moore’s work in a manifesto following the shooting in New York City. Despite the terrible circumstances, Moore stated, “No one needs to die.”
Moore described the episode as an example of “RICH ON RICH crime,” noting that Mangione comes from a wealthy family with numerous business holdings, including Lorien Health Services in Maryland. However, he highlighted that the outrage over healthcare issues is completely justified and long overdue.
Moore’s letter highlighted major issues with the healthcare system, including “mass death and misery” caused by refused insurance claims, medical debt, and escalating costs. He indicated that the public outrage is not solely about Thompson’s death but also reveals deeper, systemic flaws in the healthcare system.
Moore’s message included a free streaming link to his 2007 documentary “Sicko,” which examines the American healthcare problem and the millions of uninsured.
Authorities announced Mangione’s arrest in Pennsylvania five days after Thompson’s murder. He is deemed a “strong person of interest” and is facing gun charges.
This tragedy has sparked national debates about healthcare access, corporate responsibility, and the difficulties that Americans confront when dealing with high medical expenditures and insurance issues.
