Gellar and Boreanaz’s Emmys Reunion Honors “Buffy,” Mourns Its Losses

Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz marked 30 years of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" at the Emmys, referencing Hulu's canceled reboot and honoring three late cast members.

Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz stood together on the Emmys stage Monday night for the first time in nine years, marking thirty years since “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” premiered with a reunion that carried both nostalgia and a pointed dig at the network that recently shelved their reboot. The two presented the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, which went to Matthew Rhys, but the moment itself became one of the ceremony’s most discussed exchanges.

Boreanaz opened by marveling at the show’s premise three decades later, describing a teenage girl chosen to battle vampires and demons who falls for one carrying centuries of guilt. Gellar picked up the thread, adding her own description of Angel as an older vampire burdened by remorse. When Boreanaz mused aloud that he’d always believed Buffy and Angel belonged together, Gellar shrugged and replied that they’d never find out now, a line aimed squarely at Hulu’s decision earlier this year to cancel “Buffy: New Sunnydale,” the planned continuation series that would have brought her back in a recurring role.

That project had once carried real momentum. Chloé Zhao was attached to direct, with Ryan Kiera Armstrong set to lead a new generation of Slayers and Gellar returning to a franchise she helped define. In March, Gellar announced in an Instagram video that Hulu had pulled the plug, telling fans she was thankful for the chance to revisit the role even briefly and crediting Zhao with reminding her how much the character meant to her. Complications around the show’s intellectual property rights made it difficult to shop the project elsewhere once Hulu passed.

Gellar and Boreanaz also used their time onstage for something heavier than nostalgia or shade. The pair acknowledged that the “Buffy” family had endured a difficult stretch, with cast members Michelle Trachtenberg, Nicholas Brendon and Anthony Stewart Head all dying within roughly the past eighteen months.

Gellar told the audience she and Boreanaz felt fortunate to have known and worked alongside people she described as remarkable, a brief but clear tribute folded into an otherwise lighthearted reunion. For a show that ended in 2003, the segment served as a reminder of how much of its cast and mythology still resonates, even as the door on a modern revival appears, for now, closed.
