Jon Hamm’s fourth time hosting Saturday Night Live featured a surprise interruption during his monologue from Succession actor Kieran Culkin, leading to a mock clash over television accolades and onstage presence.
Hamm began the monologue by reflecting on his frequent appearances on the show. “I was checking my own Wikipedia, which I often do, and I found out that since [the last time I hosted], I’ve made 14 cameos,” he said. He joked that producer Lorne Michaels often told him a cameo was more special than hosting—just before losing cell service “going into the tunnel.”
A fast-cut montage of all 14 cameos played at once, prompting Hamm to react awkwardly. “OK, uh, I maybe thought they would be played separately. That’s a little weird.”
While describing how cameos can give a lift to a sketch or fill a gap in a flat monologue, Culkin stepped onto the stage unexpectedly. “Why?” Hamm asked, “I’m a huge, huge star and I’m doing really well by myself.” Culkin responded that he was just there to help and insisted it was just a cameo.
As the two traded lines, Hamm demanded repayment. “OK cool, thanks. Just give me your Oscar.” Culkin, who recently won Best Actor, refused. Hamm followed with a pointed remark: “Mad Men is better than Succession,” drawing a mix of laughter and mock gasps from the audience.
Culkin brushed it off with, “I think we can both agree that you’re wrong. I love you, bye,” before gently pushing Hamm off the stage.
The moment echoed Hamm’s earlier remarks about the impact of cameos and added a twist of rivalry between two actors closely associated with award-winning television dramas.
