Park Chan-wook’s “No Other Choice” premiered in competition at the 82nd Venice Film Festival and drew a roughly eight-minute standing ovation for its jet-black satire of layoff anxiety and modern automation.
The feature, inspired by Donald E. Westlake’s novel “The Ax,” follows a veteran paper-industry specialist who is abruptly fired and pursues a desperate course to reclaim status and income, with Lee Byung-hun and Son Ye-jin leading the ensemble. Park said the story’s long gestation—two decades from conception to screen—has only grown timelier as artificial intelligence reshapes work and heightens fears of disposability.
Reports from the Sala Grande described sustained applause of about eight to eight-and-a-half minutes, a warm reception that capped a buzzy first screening and positioned the title as an early awards contender in a 21-film field vying for the Golden Lion, to be decided on September 6.
Festival organizers’ notes frame the film as a character study that starts in domestic stability and fractures once the protagonist hears the words, “We have no other choice,” an institutional refrain that becomes a personal mantra. Early critical reactions highlighted the film’s tonal whiplash and satirical edge while pointing to Park’s precise control of mood and rhythm.
Park, returning to Venice after “Decision to Leave,” emphasized the film’s connection to today’s labor precarity and tech-driven upheaval. He noted that the material’s relevance has sharpened since he first pursued the project, and that he aimed for an ending more ambiguous than the source material to reflect moral corrosion rather than catharsis.
Cast members praised his exacting method, which he has long been known for, citing a process that demanded both precision and vulnerability. The film’s narrative focus on job insecurity and the desire to “stay in the only industry you know” underpins its bleak humor, while its Venice berth and reception suggest strong festival momentum heading into the fall circuit.
