Ryan Coogler used a spotlight moment at the Directors Guild of America Awards to talk about health care and the country’s current strain, after receiving the guild’s feature-film nominee medallion for Sinners. The medallion was presented by Michael B. Jordan, the film’s lead actor, before the guild later announced its top feature directing prize for the night went to Paul Thomas Anderson for “One Battle After Another.”

In his remarks, Coogler thanked the DGA for its health plan and tied that support to his family, referencing a sick child. In the same speech, he also referenced “domestic carnage at the hands of our government,” language that pushed the room beyond standard awards-season gratitude and into a pointed statement about the moment outside the ballroom.

The speech arrived late in a season where “Sinners” has played like both a commercial hit and a serious awards contender. The film set an Academy Awards nomination record with 16 nods, including directing and acting categories, according to reporting on the nominations announcement. It also landed a Writers Guild original screenplay nomination for Coogler.

Coogler’s DGA nomination itself carried historical weight before Saturday’s result. The San Francisco Chronicle reported he is the fifth Black director nominated for the DGA’s top feature prize, and no Black filmmaker has won that award.

Even with the loss to Anderson at the DGA, “Sinners” remains active across the guild circuit. The Producers Guild’s top award lineup included the film alongside several of the same titles competing across directing and acting groups, keeping it in the Best Picture conversation headed into the next round of major ceremonies.
