Godzilla Minus Zero First Trailer Sends the Monster to New York

Takashi Yamazaki’s follow-up to Godzilla Minus One keeps the Shikishima family at the center while expanding the monster’s reach to American soil.

Takashi Yamazaki used CinemaCon to unveil the first footage from Godzilla Minus Zero, a sequel that pushes Toho’s Oscar-winning monster hit into a bigger arena while keeping its story tied to the survivors of Godzilla Minus One. The new film will open in Japan on Nov. 3 and in North America on Nov. 6, with GKIDS handling the U.S. release in what the companies describe as the first near-simultaneous Japan-North America rollout for a Japan-produced Godzilla film.

The CinemaCon footage made clear that Yamazaki is widening the scale. Entertainment Weekly reported that the teaser ends with Godzilla advancing toward the Statue of Liberty, while English-language military dialogue hints at a stronger American role in the plot.

Yamazaki also told exhibitors that the movie is a direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One and will keep following the Shikishima family, a choice that suggests Toho is resisting the urge to turn the follow-up into a disconnected spectacle piece.

That continuity matters because Minus One broke through by grounding destruction in postwar trauma and personal guilt. GKIDS said the 2023 film grossed more than $116 million worldwide and became the highest-grossing Japan-produced Godzilla movie on record, then made history at the Academy Awards by winning best visual effects, the first Asian film to take that prize. Returning Yamazaki as director, screenwriter and VFX supervisor gives Toho a rare degree of creative consistency for a franchise that often reinvents itself from entry to entry.

The sequel also arrives with a stronger industrial footprint. Production is already underway at Toho Studios, with ROBOT producing and SHIROGUMI handling visual effects again. EW reported that Yamazaki said the movie is being filmed for IMAX, a significant upgrade for a franchise chapter that already drew attention for stretching a modest budget into large-scale destruction. Early trade reporting has also pointed to a bigger spend this time, which fits the footage’s American military hardware, rubble-heavy action and global imagery.

For Toho, the strategy is plain. Hold onto the emotional core that made the last film hit so hard, then widen the battlefield. The first footage suggests Godzilla Minus Zero wants to be the rare sequel that grows outward without cutting loose from the people who made the first story sting.
