Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro used a sold-out 25th-anniversary screening of Meet the Parents at this year’s Tribeca Festival to confirm that the long-rumored fourth film in the franchise is formally under way.
Speaking on stage, De Niro told the audience the new script “is really good,” adding that slipping back into ex-CIA patriarch Jack Byrnes “felt immediate”. Stiller echoed the enthusiasm and said pop star Ariana Grande, newly cast as the formidable fiancée of Greg and Pam’s adult son, is “the whole engine of the movie”.
Universal Pictures has set 25 November 2026 for the release and retained writer-producer John Hamburg—who penned the first three entries—to direct for the first time. Original players Blythe Danner and Teri Polo will join Stiller and De Niro, while Owen Wilson returns as eternally upbeat rival Kevin Rawley. Jay Roach, director of the initial two installments, shifts to a producing role alongside the leads under TriBeCa Productions and Red Hour Films.
Plot specifics remain under wraps, but early drafts revolve around Greg and Pam’s son introducing Grande’s character to both clans during a high-stakes wedding week, effectively flipping the in-law dynamic explored in the 2000 original. Casting is still fluid: Barbra Streisand has declared she will only reprise Dina Focker if pay parity issues from Meet the Fockers are addressed, a stance she outlined in a recent Spanish-language interview.
Industry observers note that the family-comedy sequel offers Universal a reliable holiday slot while capitalizing on generational nostalgia that has driven recent box-office revivals. Yet some analysts warn that fifteen years after Little Fockers, the creative team must update its humor to resonate with younger viewers without alienating longtime fans.
With production expected to begin early next year following Stiller’s directing commitment on season two of Severance, the studio will look to balance legacy appeal with Grande’s crossover audience and secure any remaining cast negotiations in the months ahead.
