Solvent Review: Digging Up Sins That Won’t Stay Buried

The story begins with a deceptively simple goal. We follow Gunner S. Holbrook, an American archivist with a mercenary past, as he leads a small team to a forgotten farm in the Austrian countryside. The property itself is a character, steeped in a quiet malevolence that predates their arrival. It was once home to a Nazi guard from the Chelmno extermination camp, a detail that immediately anchors the film in a tangible historical evil.

The team, which includes the guard’s grandson Ernst, is there to find lost Nazi documents. What they find instead is a scene of profound decay and bizarre personal habits; the house is filled with grime, clutter, and, most curiously, a vast collection of the previous owner’s urine stored in glass bottles. This initial academic search for papers soon uncovers something far more disturbing in the cellar, an event that brings the expedition to a violent halt and plants a dangerous obsession in Gunner’s mind.

An Architecture of Madness

Solvent constructs its narrative entirely from its protagonist’s perspective. The film uses a first-person point of view that chains the audience to Gunner’s perceptions, forcing us to experience his descent without the comfort of an objective camera. This is not a passive viewing experience; it is a form of confinement.

The storytelling is further fractured by an aggressive editing style. Quick, disorienting cuts and montages of archival footage, scenes of natural decay, and fragmented memories regularly interrupt the main action. This visual chaos serves a specific narrative function, mirroring the structural collapse of Gunner’s psyche. His mind is breaking, and so is the film’s visual language.

The sound design reinforces this breakdown. Jon Gries’s voiceover performance is the story’s primary guide, charting Gunner’s journey from a detached professional to a man consumed by paranoid ramblings, his voice becoming another texture in the disquieting auditory landscape.

An Ideology Made Liquid

The film’s central horror is built around a potent metaphor: the evil of Nazism is presented as a persistent, infectious substance. It is not an idea that simply dies with its proponents but a poison that seeps into the earth itself, waiting to contaminate a new generation. This concept is made terrifyingly literal through a strange entity or substance the team discovers in the farmhouse cellar.

Solvent Review

This liquid becomes a “solvent” for sanity and morality, corrupting all who encounter it. The story complicates a simple tale of good versus evil by revealing Gunner’s own violent history as a soldier in the U.S. military.

He is not an innocent hero confronting a foreign evil; he is a man with his own capacity for atrocity, making him a susceptible host for the farm’s lingering poison. The film uses its supernatural framework to explore very real anxieties about the resurgence of far-right ideologies, suggesting that old hatreds are always looking for a way to seep back into the present.

A Horror That Clings

The psychological dread of the film is matched by its commitment to visceral body horror. The corruption taking place within Gunner is visualized through graphic and disturbing physical transformations. The film does not shy away from upsetting imagery, including the grotesque manipulation of a high-quality prosthetic and other scenes of bodily violation and decay.

Solvent Review

These moments are not random shocks; they are the physical punctuation for Gunner’s moral and mental disintegration. His body becomes a battlefield, an external representation of the ideological poison consuming him from within.

The combination of his erratic behavior and his physical revolt creates a complete portrait of a man being erased. Solvent is a deeply unnerving experience that remains with you, a work whose power comes from its disturbing ideas and its potent, unforgettable imagery of decay.

Solvent is an English-language Austrian supernatural horror film that premiered in 2024, directed by Johannes Grenzfurthner and produced by the art group monochrom. The movie centers on a team of experts who, while searching for Nazi documents in an isolated Austrian farmhouse, uncover a far more sinister secret. The team’s leader, an American expatriate named Gunner S. Holbrook (played by Jon Gries), becomes consumed by the mystery, leading to a visceral descent into body horror and paranoia as his sanity unravels. The film blends found-footage and faux-documentary styles with black humor and explores themes related to Austria’s historical past and the corrosive force of obsession. After its festival run, which included premieres and winning awards at events like Nightmares Film Festival, the film has been made available on VOD (Video on Demand) platforms.

The Review

Solvent

8 Score

Solvent is a masterclass in narrative construction, using its fractured first-person perspective to trap the viewer inside a psychological collapse. While its experimental style and graphic body horror will prove challenging for some, the film succeeds as a potent metaphor for the persistent, infectious nature of historical evil. It is a deeply unsettling and intelligent work of horror that burrows into the mind and refuses to leave. A demanding yet rewarding cinematic excavation of the poisons that linger just beneath the surface.

PROS

  • Intelligent thematic core about the persistence of hateful ideologies.
  • Effective use of the first-person perspective to create an immersive, claustrophobic experience.
  • Unsettling atmosphere and genuinely disturbing body horror.
  • Methodical narrative structure that mirrors the protagonist's mental decay.

CONS

  • The experimental, non-linear editing style may alienate mainstream audiences.
  • Relentlessly bleak tone and graphic content could be too intense for some viewers.
  • The constant voiceover narration can occasionally feel flat.
