‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Nears $2.33 Billion, Set to Pass ‘Avatar 2’

The Tom Holland sequel's fifth-weekend haul puts it within reach of "The Force Awakens" domestic record, while "Coyote vs. Acme" scores a surprise critical hit and "The Dog Stars" struggles to find an audience.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has climbed past $2.33 billion at the global box office after five weekends in theaters, putting Sony and Marvel’s Tom Holland sequel on track to overtake “Avatar: The Way of Water” as it closes in on one of the largest theatrical runs of the decade.

The film added $22 million domestically over the weekend, pushing its North American total to $891 million. That leaves it roughly $45 million short of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which has held the unadjusted all-time domestic record of $936 million since 2015. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and produced by Marvel Studios and Amy Pascal, “Brand New Day” opened July 31 on a $225 million budget and has since broken a run of records, including the biggest domestic opening weekend ever at $360 million and the fastest climb to $700 million in North American history.

Behind it, Ketchup Entertainment’s animated feature “Coyote vs. Acme” opened in second place with an estimated $15.4 million from 3,573 locations. The film carries an unusual backstory: Warner Bros. nearly shelved it entirely for a tax write-down after merging with Discovery, reversing course only after backlash from “Looney Tunes” fans prompted Ketchup to buy the finished film for $50 million. Critics have responded warmly, with a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A grade on CinemaScore, putting it alongside “The Iron Giant” and “The Lego Movie” as one of only three Warner-produced animated films to earn that distinction.

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” held third place in its seventh weekend, adding $14.3 million domestically and $48.6 million overseas to push its worldwide total past $1.5 billion. The film has already passed “Furious 7” as Universal’s second-highest grosser ever and needs about $120 million more to overtake “Jurassic World” for the studio record.

At the bottom of the top five, 20th Century’s “The Dog Stars,” a post-apocalyptic drama starring Jacob Elordi and Josh Brolin under Ridley Scott’s direction, opened to just $8 million domestically and $19.8 million worldwide against a $70 million budget. Reviews landed at 40% on Rotten Tomatoes with a C+ CinemaScore, marking a rare box office stumble in an otherwise strong late-summer season for theaters.
