Mike Leigh has been nominated for an Academy Award seven times without ever winning. Reviews out of the Telluride Film Festival suggest his latest film, likely his last, may be the strongest case yet for changing that record.
“Tender Loving Care,” which premiered Friday at Telluride, follows an aging couple and their daughter as they confront illness, memory loss and the passage of time. Paul Jesson plays Geoff, a father showing early signs of dementia, while Marion Bailey plays his wife, Birdie, and Kate O’Flynn plays their daughter, Amy. One critic called Jesson and Bailey’s performances unforgettable despite their lack of showiness, adding that the film’s ensemble made an ordinary domestic setting feel worth spending two hours inside. Another reviewer highlighted a recurring line, “We’re going to be alright, aren’t we?”, and noted how the film’s final image complicates the reassurance the phrase seems to offer throughout.
Leigh, 83, has said the film is “almost certainly” his last, citing myositis, a muscle-wasting condition that kept him from attending his own premiere in person. He has resisted describing the film as a deliberate farewell, framing the likely end of his directing career as a physical rather than creative limitation. Known for developing scripts through extended workshopping with actors rather than a conventional screenplay, Leigh has made 22 features and roughly 20 stage plays over five decades, earning a Palme d’Or and a Golden Lion along the way.
The film holds an 86 score on Metacritic following its festival debut, and its reception has already stirred awards-season conversation. One columnist argued the film deserves a genuine Oscar campaign built on its craft rather than sentiment toward Leigh’s career, noting that recognizing his body of work should not require pretending his chances rest on sympathy alone. Bleecker Street will release “Tender Loving Care” in limited theaters starting Dec. 4, positioning it alongside the studio’s broader slate for this year’s awards season.
