Ernest Harden Jr. won his first Emmy Award on Sunday night at age 73, taking Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Louie Cloverfield, an alcoholic patient whose season-long arc on HBO Max’s “The Pitt” ends in death. The veteran character actor accepted the award with his eyes closed and dedicated it to Bette Davis, his co-star from the 1980 film “White Mama,” who was nominated for an Emmy for that role but never won. “We didn’t make it then but this one is for us,” he said from the stage.
Harden built a decades-long career on supporting parts and brief guest turns before landing his largest television role yet across 11 episodes of “The Pitt” over two seasons. He thanked executive producer John Wells and star Noah Wyle for the opportunity, and paid tribute to his late parents. “I just wish my parents were here to see this,” he said. “They would have been so proud.”
Backstage, Harden described learning his character would die before season two began, noticing changes among the wardrobe department that tipped him off. He told reporters at an earlier Emmy nominee event that he pushed himself into an unusually physical performance to play a dying man convincingly, including going off his blood pressure medication to better mimic his character’s declining condition. He recalled crying during his own funeral scene, hidden from the cast because his character lay motionless. Production built out a section of the hospital set solely for that sequence, a gesture he said the entire cast responded to during filming.
“I am on cloud 25,” Harden said of the win. “I’m not saying this is a complete surprise because ‘The Pitt’ is such a powerful show to come from, but just to get it in your hands is like unreal.” The role marked his first Emmy nomination in a career built largely on one- and two-episode guest spots in film and television. His win adds to a night defined by long-awaited breakthroughs, alongside first-time wins for several of his fellow nominees across the drama and comedy guest categories.
