Nathan Fielder’s Secret Elizabeth Holmes Doc Revealed at Telluride

Shot over three years and beginning weeks before Holmes entered prison, "You Can See Everything" had its surprise premiere at Telluride ahead of an October release.

Nathan Fielder’s Elizabeth Holmes documentary emerged Sunday night as Telluride Film Festival’s long-speculated secret screening, ending years of rumors that the comedian had been quietly filming the disgraced Theranos founder. A24 confirmed the project, titled “You Can See Everything,” and released a teaser trailer alongside the world premiere, promising a theatrical release in October.

Fielder co-directed the 174-minute film with Lance Oppenheim, whose thriller “Primetime,” starring Robert Pattinson as Chris Hansen, debuted to strong reviews at Venice days earlier. According to A24’s synopsis, Holmes invited a skeptical film crew into her life 34 days before she reported to federal prison for defrauding Theranos investors, a arrangement that stretched into a three-year shoot. The studio describes the result as a shift from intimate character study into what it calls a mind-bending descent. In the teaser, Fielder presses Holmes on her sincerity as she tends to her newborn; she answers, “I’m not that person. I can promise you that.”

Festival organizers required attendees to check their phones before entering, and lines for the screening stretched longer than any other slot at Telluride this year. A24 asked press members present not to disclose plot details, fueling online speculation about what the finished film actually contains. Holmes was convicted in 2022 of defrauding investors in her blood-testing startup and is currently serving an 11-year federal sentence.

Fielder built his reputation on “Nathan for You” and HBO’s “The Rehearsal,” shows built around uncomfortable, slow-building confrontations between his deadpan persona and unsuspecting subjects. Oppenheim, known for “Some Kind of Heaven” and the HBO docuseries “Ren Faire,” brings a more traditional documentary sensibility with cinematic polish.

Pairing the two directors with a subject already famous for controlling her own narrative struck early viewers as a natural fit for Fielder’s method, which typically waits out his subjects until something unscripted slips through. Hollywood has pursued the Holmes story in various forms for years, including a scripted limited series, but “You Can See Everything” marks the first version built from Holmes’s own direct participation.
