The news that Final Fantasy XVI would remain exclusive to PlayStation 5 indefinitely seemed unlikely, and now Square Enix has officially confirmed what fans were eagerly anticipating: Final Fantasy XVI is coming to PC.
Producer Naoki Yoshida has clarified that the development of the PC version of Final Fantasy XVI will commence after its initial release on PlayStation 5, scheduled for June 22. While the title was initially presented as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, neither Square Enix nor Sony explicitly stated the duration of the exclusivity period.
As PC ports of the mainline Final Fantasy games have become increasingly common in recent years, along with remakes of earlier titles, the news of a PC version for Final Fantasy XVI is not surprising.
An Exclusivity Period Revealed
A brief hint regarding the potential release of Final Fantasy XVI on platforms other than PlayStation was found in a November 2022 clip. In fine print, it mentioned a six-month exclusivity period on PS5. Looking at historical examples, Final Fantasy XV made its way to PC in 2018, two years after its initial release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Similarly, the Final Fantasy VII Remake arrived on the Epic Games Store in December 2021, approximately a year and a half after its launch on PS4 in April 2020, and more recently became available on Steam.
