Fans of the Formula 1 racing series eagerly await each new edition from Codemasters. For over a decade now, the developers have worked to bring the pulse-pounding experience of Grand Prix circuits to homes around the world. Their latest installment, F1 24, focuses on immersing players in the driver’s perspective like never before.

This year, you can slip into the racing suit and sit behind the wheel of actual competitors. Choose from current Formula 1 stars or past legends and feel the rush of their careers unfolding based on your performance on the track. Whether fighting tooth and nail with a fierce rival or guiding a struggling team to unexpected wins, your decisions directly shape both man and machine. Team leaders will take note of your results, possibly offering tempting deals for a change in scenery.

Codemasters also strived to heighten the visceral sensation of racing. They refined how each car reacts to ensure rivals truly handle differently depending on their construction. Mastering the temperamental machines demands perfect timing on the limit of adhesion.

The tweaked physics even take into account shifting track conditions, like increasing risk on a dampening surface. With a revamped career and challenges that push your limits, F1 24 promises to deliver edge-of-your-seat action that earns real bragging rights.

Driving Your Career

Formula One offers some of the most thrilling racing anywhere, but for gamers, it’s also presented strategic career challenges behind the wheel. The latest F1 focuses on your efforts as the driver, aiming to rise through the ranks.

In previous years, managing both your mechanic skills and financial books proved engaging, even if keeping all the plates spinning strained realism at times. Now fully immersing as a racer streamlines the action. Your sole aim is to prove yourself the best on course while building your reputation off it.

Each race sees your driver rating shift. Strong showings boost handling and perks as your team optimizes support. Stumble, and your position wavers. Mid-race tasks provide edge-of-seat extra objectives, like slashing rival gaps or banking consistent laps. Performance directly impacts career potential through contract talks with the current team or suitors hoping to sign you.

Challenge A career turns the competition personal. Unique scenarios judge skills rather than seasons, racking points across goals. Complete bonus tricks for even larger tallies. Leaderboards fuel friendly feuding to top rankings, whatever driving style. Relive epic campaigns or assemble your own innovative strategies to constantly outperform old ones.

The focus now centers squarely on gripping races rather than extra duties. Yet dynamic contracts and rivalries weave an immersive narrative around each controller-clutching contest. With Challenge Career inviting constant reinvention too, driving forcefields emerge for veterans and newcomers alike to push limits and find fresh challenges on every virtual lap.

Fresh Coat of Asphalt

There’s a noticeable difference the moment you take your first corner. The cars react to the slightest steering input, dancing on the edge between grip and slip as they transition from one turn to the next. Silverstone’s sweeping Maggots and Beckets complex demands precision, rewarding careful car placement and braking with a surge of acceleration onto the Hangar straight. Spa’s Eau Rouge has been reimagined, now pushing drivers to perfectly balance risk and control on the brink of overspeeding through the challenging uphill kink.

F1 24 Review

Codemasters sought input from world champion Max Verstappen to craft the most realistic handling model yet. Each car truly feels unique, with nuanced strengths and weaknesses imprinted in their physical design.

Getting the most from machinery as evolved as these F1 vehicles demands an intuitive feel for weight transfer, traction variance, and the delicate interplay between aerodynamic elements. Feedback is conveyed through controller vibrations or wheel resistance with surgery-tool precision.

Though pushing limits is its own reward, the AI provides fierce competition across skill levels. Their machines are imbued with an animal instinct for exploiting any weakness. Overtaking is challenging and can be achieved through meticulous braking observation or well-planned drafting maneuvers down the pit straight. When mistakes slip in, whether by user or computer, the consequences feel high. Loose wheels or bouncing cars threaten to end promising races abruptly.

Players seeking the ultimate test can dive into the immersive depths of full-damage simulation. Even minor locks can slowly dismantle a machine over a period of time. Every contact brings the potential for a safety car, sometimes ending podium hopes for all involved. This refocused attention to nuance and risk-reward decision-making brings out Formula 1’s exhilarating tension on each fresh coat of asphalt.

F1 Races Ahead with Visuals

The visual flair of F1 24 leaps forward another lap. Codemasters continues to polish its precision presentation of Formula One’s perfectly-plotted circuits. This year, Silverstone, Spa, Jeddah, and Lusail receive visual overhauls, modeled closer to real life with passion for pavement placement. Track textures shine in 4K clarity, while ray tracing offers the option to introduce immersive illumination effects.

F1 24 Review

Such showcase surroundings set a stellar stage for 40 drivers displaying their daring at top speed. Their detailed depictions have developed further, resembling the actual athletes at the wheel. Subtle shifts in facial features and flesh tones bring these bolshy personalities pulsating to pixelated pixel perfection. Yet room remains for realism refinement, as virtual visions do not quite nail natural gesticulation in simulation.

A testament to optimization, vistas maintain vividness on varied videographic valuations. High-end rigs revel in ray-traced radiance with nary a dropped frame. Meanwhile, less capable PCs prosper through plenty of performance parameter personalization. Whichever the hardware, honeycomb helmets and halo innovation come into focus, flags flapping flawlessly as four-wheel fighters ferociously fight for first at each venue.

All told, with its dynamic demonstrations and diligent development, F1 24 pushes visual verisimilitude ever closer to the checkered flag. Audiences can appreciate the exquisite art accompanying another astounding season of motorsport’s mightiest main event.

Missing Drama

The absence of Braking Point this year is definitely a blow. That gripping story mode brought F1’s rivalries to life in a compelling narrative that had you on the edge of your seat, race after race. Getting invested in the ups and downs of your driver’s career, along with building relationships and rivalries with teammates, engineers, and other personalities in the paddock, It really pulled you into the world of F1.

F1 24 Review

Without it, there’s no hook to draw you deep into the single-player experience. Career mode is still solid fun with its driver upgrades and team management. But it won’t have you longing to play ‘just one more race’ like the drama of Braking Point.

The soap opera of the sport is what makes it such compelling viewing, and the story mode captured that intensity perfectly in the cutscenes between the action. Really made you feel part of the F1 family. It’s a shame we have to wait until the next installment to see where things go for that driver you created and guided up the ranks. Those characters and their journeys were truly engaging.

With any luck, Braking Point returns bigger and better than before. But for now, its absence leaves a vacancy that no other mode completely fills. The human stories are what give F1 its heart, so losing that gripping story leaves this year’s game feeling a little less rich.

Out of Pitcoins and Into Points

While previous F1 titles introduced minigames for tweaking car upgrades and collecting cosmetics, this year’s version doubles down on grinding goals for rewards. F1 World returns with a bevy of events, calling players to spend hours earning points redeemable in the prize shop. Here, all manner of decals, gear, and stickers wait behind paywalls of virtual currency.

F1 24 Review

It’s a deflating distraction from the sport itself. No matter the fun of challenging AI rivals or friends online, the reward for long sessions loses its shine when you see gaudy trinkets instead of actual car advancements.

By restricting customization options to loot boxes and level passes, passion projects take a backseat to pay-for-play systems. The enthusiasm for painting proud national colors or personal designs dims when confronted with dollar signs.

Still, the track time remains top-notch, and the and the simulations as finely tuned as the cars themselves. Detailed circuits pull players in despite peripheral disappointments, keeping focus on the feel of formula and thrill of taking checks at speed. If future versions steer clear of manipulative monetization tactics to again make racing the sole reward, fans worldwide will gladly stay hooked for years to come.

The Checkered Flag

Codemasters’ F1 series continues to deliver thrilling racing action with its latest installment. F1 24 perfectly captures the speed and excitement of Formula 1, letting players live out their dreams of driving for Ferrari or Red Bull. Veteran players will appreciate refined handling that feels closer than ever to the real thing. Career mode also takes an exciting new turn with its focus on building a lasting legacy over multiple seasons.

F1 24 Review

Still, for regular fans of the franchise, F1 24 may not bring enough new to the track to warrant upgrading. The fun remains familiar, with practice sessions, qualifying, and competitive races forming the backbone of the experience.

While new driver details are a nice touch, it’s harder to shake the feeling you’ve experienced it all before. Those yet to take the wheel will find far more to explore and enjoy for hours on end. Looking ahead, the series could benefit from bolder innovation that reimagines classic modes. Perhaps next time we will introduce all-new story content to draw us in like never before.

Fresh multilayer options could also keep online lobbies feeling fresh. Until then, F1 24 delivers the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat better than any. For newcomers, the checkered flag is well worth chasing across its wide array of circuits.

The Review

F1 24

7 Score

While F1 24 delivers more of the polished racing action fans have come to expect, it makes few meaningful strides beyond familiar career and multiplayer modes. The addictive racing remains top-notch, with visuals and authentic F1 licenses as alluring as ever. However, without narrative campaigns or substantively different modes to rediscover, veterans may find little here that grabs them for another lap.

PROS

  • Refined and accessible driving mechanics
  • Career mode focuses on individual drivers and seasons.
  • Classic F1 circuits and car/player licenses are well realized.
  • Visuals remain top-notch for the genre.

CONS

  • Minimal innovation for series veterans
  • There are few truly new modes or features to rediscover.
  • Microtransactions are still present in the F1 world.
  • Low replay value without major narrative campaigns
