Tom Pelphrey Wins First Emmy, Dedicates It to Pregnant Kaley Cuoco

Kaley Cuoco couldn’t hold back tears Monday night as Tom Pelphrey, her fiancé and the father of her children, walked to the Emmys stage to accept his first career win. The actor took Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Robbie Prendergrast in HBO’s “Task,” beating a field that included three of his own castmates’ rivals from “The Pitt” along with Billy Crudup and Jack Lowden.

Pelphrey opened his remarks by thanking God for his life and his sobriety, then widened his gratitude to the friends and family who had stood by him across years spent moving between major productions and small black box theaters. He turned to “Task” creator Brad Ingelsby, calling him an incredible human being and crediting him with a role and friendship that meant everything to him. He also singled out co-star Mark Ruffalo, addressing him warmly as a friend he was proud to know, along with castmates Raúl Castillo and Emilia Jones.

The speech built toward its final line, when Pelphrey turned to Cuoco, seated in the audience and visibly emotional. He called her his favorite actor in the room, his love, his best friend and his partner, adding that she was, at that moment, very pregnant with their second child. He described their growing family as the finest part of his life. Presenters Rachel Sennott and Odessa A’zion had set up the category with a joke about being major supporters of “actor drama,” a line that only sharpened the sincerity of what followed.

Pelphrey’s win caps a long, uneven run through Hollywood recognition. He earned an Emmy nomination for his guest turn on “Ozark” playing Ben Davis, a performance that drew acclaim even in a year the Television Academy overlooked him, and he later picked up a nomination for flashback scenes in the show’s final season.

“Task,” from “Mare of Easttown” creator Ingelsby, cast him as a young father whose escalating revenge plot collides with Ruffalo’s grieving FBI agent, a role that ended with his character’s death before the season’s close. The show returns for a second season without him. Backstage, Pelphrey admitted he barely remembered what he’d said onstage, only that he’d carried a loose mental list of who he needed to thank.
