The highly anticipated “Dexter: Original Sin” prequel series is set to bring back several beloved characters from the original “Dexter” show, offering fans a glimpse into the early years of the iconic forensic analyst turned vigilante serial killer. As details emerge about the upcoming Showtime series, information about the ages of returning characters and the actors portraying them has sparked interest and some surprise among the fanbase.

The prequel will focus on a 20-year-old Dexter Morgan as he begins his career at the Miami Metro Police Department and embraces his “dark passenger” under the guidance of his adoptive father, Harry Morgan. Patrick Gibson, 29, has been cast to play the young Dexter, creating a 9-year age gap between the actor and the character he’s portraying.

Other returning characters include Dexter’s sister Debra Morgan, likely to be around 17 or 18 years old in the prequel, played by Molly Brown, who is estimated to be in her early twenties. This represents a slight deviation from the original series’ timeline, where Debra was 26 in the first season of “Dexter.”

Christian Slater, 54, will step into the role of Harry Morgan, who is expected to be around 53 in the prequel. This casting choice aligns closely with the character’s age in the original series and suggests that viewers may witness Harry’s final year, as Dexter was 20 when his father died by suicide.

The prequel will also feature younger versions of familiar faces from the Miami Metro Police Department. Angel Batista, originally played by David Zayas, will be portrayed by James Martinez, 37. While Batista should technically be 29 in the prequel’s timeline, it’s likely he’ll be depicted as being in his early to mid-thirties.

Christina Milian, 42, has been cast as María LaGuerta, a character who was also 42 when introduced in the original series. Despite the age discrepancy, Milian’s youthful appearance is expected to allow her to portray LaGuerta in her early thirties.

Vince Masuka, Dexter’s colleague in forensics, will be played by Alex Shimizu. In the prequel, Masuka is meant to be the same age as Dexter, 20, though Shimizu appears to be in his late twenties or early thirties.

The series has also added some star power with Patrick Dempsey joining the cast as Captain Aaron Spencer, a new character in the Dexter universe who works alongside Harry Morgan.

While some fans have expressed concern about the age discrepancies between the actors and their characters, others are excited about the new perspectives these castings might bring to the beloved franchise. The addition of veteran actors like Slater and Dempsey has further fueled anticipation for the series.

“Dexter: Original Sin” promises to delve into the formative years of one of television’s most complex anti-heroes, exploring the origins of Dexter’s “code” and the events that shaped him into the character fans know from the original series. While an official release date has not yet been announced, the prequel is already generating significant buzz among “Dexter” enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
