The Resident Evil franchise has undergone a remarkable transformation with the release of the seventh installment in 2017. Titled Resident Evil 7, this installment marked a significant departure from the previous games in the series and presented players with a “soft” reboot, introducing a brand new storyline and protagonist, Ethan Winters.
Capcom, the developer of the series, made a bold decision to veer away from the traditional path and create a fresh start for the franchise.
The move was aimed at attracting new players who may have been intimidated by the complex and convoluted storyline of the previous games. With Resident Evil 7, players could jump right into the action without having to worry about the events of its predecessors.
It’s worth noting that prior to the release of Resident Evil 7, Capcom had been working on a direct sequel to the critically polarizing Resident Evil 6.
However, the developer recognized the need for a change and decided to steer the franchise in a new direction with Resident Evil 7. The result was a highly successful and critically acclaimed game that breathed new life into the Resident Evil franchise.
A dedicated Resident Evil fan by the name of Dusk Golem recently took to Twitter to share a pair of concept arts from an early version of Resident Evil 7. The artwork depicts Leon Kennedy and Sherry Birkin traveling through a European city, inspired by the iconic city of Venice.
The early version of Resident Evil 7 promised to offer players a new and exciting experience with “Choice” moments, where time would slow down and the player would be presented with a crucial decision to make.
The mechanics were inspired by Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, released in 1999, as well as popular narrative-driven games like TellTale. A playable demo was even created for this version, offering players between 30 to 60 minutes of thrilling gameplay.
However, as we now know, Capcom eventually abandoned this concept and took the franchise in a completely different direction, opting to return to the series’ roots. The result was the highly successful and acclaimed Resident Evil 7, which marked a new chapter in the franchise’s history.
