Deadline, which initially broke the news of the deal, noted that the field narrowed down from five to three serious contenders in the final stages. Eventually, Kardashian, along with co-writers Paula Pell and Janine Brito, finalized the deal with Netflix, marking a significant win for the streaming giant.
“The Fifth Wheel” is being produced by Paula Pell, a veteran of “Saturday Night Live,” in collaboration with Kardashian. This project is a notable step for Kim Kardashian, who has primarily been known for her business ventures like Skims and her reality TV fame from “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” Her recent appearance in “American Horror Story” alongside Emma Roberts demonstrated her growing interest and capability in scripted roles.

This approach is evidenced by their diverse slate, including “A Family Affair” featuring Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and Joey King; “Lonely Planet” with Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth; and Dan Levy’s directorial debut “Good Grief” starring Ruth Negga, Himesh Patel, and Luke Evans.
Paula Pell, recognized for her work on “Sisters” with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, and her role in the Peacock series “Girls5Eva,” brings a wealth of experience to the table. Janine Brito, Pell’s spouse, who also appeared alongside her in “Girls5Eva,” garners her first major writing credit with “The Fifth Wheel.” Brito’s background includes contributions to the writers’ room for NBC’s sitcom “Mr. Mayor.”
