Andrzej Sapkowski, the author behind the renowned “The Witcher” novels, which have inspired both the CD Projekt Red’s video game series and Netflix’s TV adaptation, recently shared his views on these adaptations.
His remarks, made at the Vienna Comic Con and in an interview with Cerealkillers, offer a glimpse into his experience of seeing his literary work transformed into visual media.
Sapkowski, whose writing style focuses intensely on the power of words and letters, finds the transition of his stories from page to screen inherently odd. He stated that his primary tool as a writer is the letter, not the picture.
He relies on letters to evoke imagery in readers’ minds, making the visual adaptations of his work feel “strange” and at times surprising. This perspective underscores the inherent differences between literary and visual storytelling.
Interaction with Netflix and Lack of Influence on Adaptation
When discussing the Netflix series adaptation specifically, Sapkowski revealed that his feedback was largely ignored by the streaming giant. Despite being invited to the set, where he praised its “tremendous” nature, he humorously recounted how his suggestions seemed to fall on deaf ears, with Netflix executives appearing dismissive of his role as the author.
Sapkowski’s comments gain additional significance in light of Henry Cavill’s recent departure from the Netflix series. Cavill, who passionately portrayed Geralt of Rivia and was known for his dedication to remaining true to the book series, unexpectedly left the show after three seasons.
