In a landscape increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence, the gaming industry is no exception to speculation and debate about AI usage. Recently, Genvid Holdings CEO Jacob Navrok addressed rumors about the use of AI in the creation of “Silent Hill: Ascension,” a live service game developed in collaboration with Konami. Navrok’s statement directly counters claims that AI was involved in the game’s development, particularly in its writing.

Clarifying the Role of AI in Game Development

Silent Hill: Ascension

“Silent Hill: Ascension,” which has faced its share of criticism, found itself at the center of controversy when fans and critics alike speculated that its narrative content might have been AI-generated. This assumption was based on certain elements within the game, such as the peculiar “berry man” character, which fans found unusually strange.

In response, Navrok took to Twitter to emphasize that every word in “Ascension” was penned by real people, including writers with impressive credentials from projects like Telltale titles, Pixar, “God of War: Ragnarok,” and “Resident Evil Village.” He stressed that none of the 100,000+ words were authored by Large Language Models (LLMs) or any AI technology.

Despite this clear statement, the discussion did not end there. Online investigations revealed that Navrok had previously mentioned the use of AI characters in future projects of the company. Additionally, the company’s involvement in AI-centric events, including a talk at the Simulations Summit, added fuel to the speculative fire.

In a Vulture interview, Navrok mentioned that AI was initially considered for “Ascension,” but testing yielded unsatisfactory, even “lynchian” results, leading to its eventual dismissal from the project.

Understanding the Implications of AI in Creative Processes

The ongoing debate highlights the complex, often ambiguous nature of AI’s role in creative industries. Genvid, known for creating massively interactive online events (MILES), is evidently exploring AI’s potential for future endeavors.

However, Navrok’s statements have specifically addressed the writing aspect of “Silent Hill: Ascension,” leaving open the possibility of AI’s application in other areas of the project.

This situation reflects a broader trend where the involvement of AI in media production, whether confirmed or speculated, sparks discussions about authenticity, creativity, and the future of human versus AI-generated content. As AI technology becomes more advanced and pervasive, such dialogues are becoming increasingly common across various media platforms.
