In a surprising move, Microsoft is reportedly planning to bring its recently released Xbox/PC exclusive game Pentiment to rival PlayStation and Nintendo platforms. The medieval narrative adventure game is expected to be announced for PS5 and Nintendo Switch during an upcoming Xbox business strategy podcast.
Pentiment launched last November as an Xbox console exclusive and PC title. The artistic game from Obsidian Entertainment received positive reviews, praised for its unique visual style and branching storytelling. It had been positioned as a key exclusive title for Xbox and Windows gamers.
However, sources have now confirmed plans to expand Pentiment’s reach by publishing on Xbox’s chief hardware competitors. The podcast will apparently outline Microsoft’s new openness to releasing games across multiple platforms, not just their own Xbox and PC ecosystems.
Pentiment Becomes First Xbox Title to Go Multiplatform
Another recently exclusive title, Hi-Fi Rush, is also rumored to be coming to PlayStation and Nintendo alongside Pentiment. And Xbox staple franchise Sea of Thieves could follow later this year. More first-party Xbox Game Studios titles are said to be under consideration for multi-platform ports.
This strategy marks a dramatic shift for Microsoft and the Xbox platform. The company has invested heavily in first-party studios and content with the aim of driving Xbox console and Game Pass service growth. Releasing those key games on rival hardware seems counterintuitive.
A Pivotal Moment for Xbox’s Content Strategy
But Xbox is reportedly struggling to meet subscriber targets and launch hit new IP. Expanding to PlayStation and Nintendo’s huge install bases provides an opportunity to improve content sales. It may also reduce Xbox’s association solely with big-budget shooters and broaden its appeal.
During the February 23rd podcast, Microsoft will clearly explain the reasoning and expectations behind this platform agnostic approach. But the announcement alone signals a major philosophical change and new era for Xbox gaming. While good for general gamers who dislike exclusivity, it may lessen Xbox’s identity as a distinct platform.
