In a startling revelation, acclaimed actor Giancarlo Esposito has opened up about the depths of his struggles as an unemployed actor, confessing that at his lowest point, he even contemplated arranging his own murder to secure his family’s financial future through life insurance.
The Emmy-nominated star, beloved for his portrayal of the formidable Gus Fring in the ‘Breaking Bad’ universe, recently detailed the harrowing circumstances that preceded his career-defining role during an interview with SiriusXM’s ‘Jim & Sam’ show.
“My way out in my brain was: ‘Hey, do you get life insurance if someone commits suicide? Do they get the bread?'” Esposito recalled, referring to his thought process at the time. With a wife and four children to support, the actor admitted, “I just started scheming. If I got somebody to knock me off, death through misadventure, [my kids] would get the insurance.”
Esposito painted a bleak picture of his mindset, driven by desperation to provide for his family. “I had four kids. I wanted them to have a life. It was a hard moment in time. I literally thought of self-annihilation so they could survive. That’s how low I was.”
Fortunately, Esposito’s love for his children and desire to spare them trauma ultimately dissuaded him from following through. “Then I started to think that’s not viable because the pain I would cause them would be lifelong, and lifelong trauma that would just extend the generational trauma which I’m trying to move away from,” he explained.
It was the role of Gus Fring in Vince Gilligan’s groundbreaking series ‘Breaking Bad’ that proved to be Esposito’s lifeline. “The light at the end of the tunnel was ‘Breaking Bad,'” he stated, crediting the iconic character with putting his career on an upward trajectory after years of struggle.
