Fans of the DC Universe have been eagerly awaiting the unveiling of the new era under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran, and the wait is finally over. According to a Warner Bros. panel at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the animated series Creature Commandos is set to premiere in December 2024 on Max, marking the official launch of Gunn and Safran’s reimagined DCU.

Based on the characters created by J.M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick, Creature Commandos follows the formation of a black ops team of monstrous prisoners assembled by the formidable Amanda Waller, portrayed by Viola Davis. This ragtag crew of military superhumans includes a vampire, a werewolf, a gorgon, and a human leader, promising an intriguing blend of supernatural and tactical elements.

The star-studded voice cast features Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma as the Bride of Frankenstein, Zoe Chao as scientist Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot and Weasel, and Steve Agee as John Economos.

Gunn, who will serve as the writer and director for the upcoming Superman film, explained the strategic decision to launch the DCU with Creature Commandos, stating, “It was written and ready to go. We thought it worked well as an aperitif before the meal of Superman.”

The seven-episode animated series will kick off Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, the first phase of Gunn and Safran’s ambitious DC Universe. Following Creature Commandos, the highly anticipated Superman movie, starring David Corenswet as the iconic hero, will hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Subsequent projects in the lineup include Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, featuring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, and Peacemaker season 2, starring John Cena.

As the DCU takes shape, fans can also look forward to other planned television series such as Waller, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, and Booster Gold, as well as Matt Reeves’ Arkham series, which Gunn has confirmed will be part of the interconnected universe.
