The animated sequel “Despicable Me 4” has stormed the box office, dethroning the record-breaking “Inside Out 2” after its three-week reign. The fourth installment in the popular franchise grossed an impressive $27 million on its opening Friday, setting it on track for a projected $120 million five-day opening weekend.

This strong performance comes despite mixed critical reception, with the film holding a 54% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the Despicable Me series has consistently appealed to younger audiences, for whom reviews are less influential. The franchise, including its Minions spin-offs, has now surpassed $4.6 billion in worldwide earnings since its 2010 debut.

Meanwhile, “Inside Out 2” continues to perform well, securing the second spot with an estimated $31 million for the weekend. Its domestic total has surpassed $515 million, making it the third-highest-grossing animated film of all time in North America. The Pixar sequel is now chasing “Incredibles 2” for the all-time animated record of $608 million.

The box office success extends beyond animation, with horror and action films also finding success. “A Quiet Place: Day One” is expected to earn $22 million in its second weekend, while A24’s “MaXXXine” is aiming for a franchise-best opening. “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” rounds out the top five, approaching the $180 million mark domestically.

Industry experts attribute this diverse box office performance to the variety of films available, catering to different audience preferences. AMC CEO Adam Aron praised filmmakers and studios for delivering compelling theatrical experiences, emphasizing the enduring appeal of the big screen.

As “Despicable Me 4” leads the charge, questions arise about the franchise’s longevity. Star Steve Carell expressed enthusiasm for continuing to voice Gru, stating, “I hope it goes on for as long as people want to watch it.”

With the summer movie season in full swing, theaters are benefiting from increased foot traffic as families and moviegoers of all ages choose the cinematic experience over at-home entertainment options.
