In a bold move to reinvigorate the cinema-going experience, Blue Starlite Entertainment and CineLife Entertainment have announced “Silents Synced,” a innovative series that pairs classic silent films with iconic rock albums. This unique project aims to blend the visual artistry of early cinema with the powerful soundscapes of modern rock music, creating a fresh and immersive viewing experience.
The series will kick off with a screening of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 horror classic “Nosferatu,” accompanied by Radiohead’s albums “KID A” and “Amnesiac.” Following this, plans are in place to pair Buster Keaton’s “Sherlock, Jr.” with music from R.E.M. The companies are also in talks with other renowned bands such as Pearl Jam, Pixies, Amon Tobin, and They Might Be Giants for future pairings.
Josh Frank, CEO and creator of Silents Synced, explained the rationale behind the project: “Silents Synced is a strategic format to draw new audiences to cinemas for a communal music experience like no other. The question for independent theater operators has become what can we do to inspire people to leave their homes outside of Hollywood blockbuster films?”
Frank emphasized the potential of tapping into music fan bases as a new audience for cinemas. “While traditional moviegoers will always be our lifeblood, music fans will go to greater lengths for a shared experience. They are a fundamentally new audience for us all,” he stated.
The series is set to launch later this year with the “Radiohead: Nosferatu” event, followed by the “Sherlock, Jr./R.E.M.” pairing in 2025. Subsequent projects are planned for release every four months.
Interestingly, this innovative approach to screening “Nosferatu” comes in the same year as Robert Eggers’ highly anticipated remake of the vampire classic. Eggers’ version, starring Bill Skarsgård as the titular character, is scheduled for a Christmas Day 2024 release. The remake promises a fresh take on the story, with Skarsgård hinting at a sexualized portrayal of the vampire that aims to both attract and repulse viewers.
