Star Trek is boldly going in some cool new directions. At San Diego Comic-Con, the producers of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds announced that one of the most beloved characters from the original 1960s series is joining the crew.
Scotty, the engineering genius played by James Doohan, will be a regular part of the Strange New Worlds cast. But he won’t be played by Doohan – the role is going to British actor Martin Quinn. This makes Quinn the first Scottish actor to play Scotty, which is pretty neat.
Quinn has appeared in shows across the pond like Derry Girls and Annika. But playing young Scotty is a huge deal. Strange New Worlds acts as a prequel, set years before the classic Enterprise adventures. So we’ll get to see Scotty in his early days, still learning from his mentor at Starfleet Academy.
The producers shared an exclusive clip of Quinn as Scotty too. He was manning the transporter room, no doubt working hard to get crew beamed up safely. The executives and some cast talked about season 3 and what it will explore with Scotty. It should be cool to learn more about how he became the top engineer we know.
Beyond Strange New Worlds, the panel also gave us sneak peeks at two other Star Trek shows. Section 31 is going to be a movie focusing on the top secret black ops group. And Lower Decks will be back for a fifth season of adventure on the Cerritos.
So whether you’re into secret spy action or laughs about life in Starfleet, there’s more Star Trek fun on the way. With favorite characters getting deeper development, it’s an exciting time to be a Trekker!
