Maya Hawke, who portrays Robin Buckley in the hit Netflix series “Stranger Things,” has provided fans with an intriguing update on the show’s highly anticipated fifth and final season. In a recent interview on the “Podcrushed” podcast, Hawke shed light on the ambitious scale of the upcoming episodes, suggesting that viewers should prepare for a cinematic experience.
“We’re making, basically, eight movies,” Hawke revealed, emphasizing the substantial length of each episode. “The episodes are very long.” This statement aligns with comments from producer Shawn Levy, who previously described the final season as “major, major, cinematic storytelling that happens to be called a TV series.”
Production on the final season, which began in January 2024 following delays caused by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, is expected to continue for approximately a year. Hawke attributed the lengthy production schedule to the showrunners’ commitment to quality and their hands-on approach to the writing process.
“Our showrunners, Matt and Ross [Duffer], take a lot of responsibility,” Hawke explained. “They have an amazing team of writers, but they’re very involved. They write a lot and they are very intense and serious about the quality of the continued writing, and it takes a long time to write each season, and it takes a long time to shoot them.”
While the Duffer Brothers had previously suggested that Season 5 might not run as long as Season 4, which featured several extended episodes, Hawke’s comments indicate that fans can still expect substantial content. The final season will consist of eight episodes, with the first titled “Chapter One: The Crawl.”
The star-studded cast, including Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, and Millie Bobby Brown, will be joined by newcomer Linda Hamilton of “The Terminator” fame in an undisclosed role.
As “Stranger Things” prepares to conclude its run, the scale and scope of the production suggest that Netflix is pulling out all the stops to ensure a memorable finale. While an exact release date has not been announced, the series is expected to premiere sometime in 2025.
For fans eagerly awaiting the return to Hawkins and the Upside Down, Hawke’s update promises an epic conclusion to the beloved series, blurring the lines between television and cinema in what’s shaping up to be a landmark event in streaming entertainment.
