The announcement of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection has fighting game fans buzzing! This package of arcade classics, coming to Nintendo Switch this fall, has everyone talking about whether it could lead to an all-new Marvel vs. Capcom game.
I talked to Shuhei Matsumoto, the producer in charge of the collection, about how it all came together. He said Capcom’s been trying for years to re-release these Marvel games, but it took a lot of back-and-forth with Marvel to get the green light. “We wanted fans to experience these games on modern systems,” Matsumoto told me.
What really pushed Marvel over the edge? Matsumoto credits big fighting game tournaments like EVO that kept the spirit of Marvel vs. Capcom alive. Marvel saw people still loved the games years later. “The community showed how much demand there was for these titles,” he said.
You can look forward to seven sweet games in the collection, including X-Men vs. Street Fighter and the totally awesome Marvel vs. Capcom 2. With fans going wild online, everyone’s wondering if this success might lead to Marvel vs. Capcom 4 down the road.
Matsumoto remains hopeful, saying “We want to show people how cool these games are and give them an opportunity to find new fans.” That lines up with what happened back in 2010 – after hints at new Versus games, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was announced.
So even if Marvel vs. Capcom 4 isn’t quite a done deal yet, the future is looking bright! As long as passionate fans keep showing love for these games, there’s a good chance we may see more Marvel madness from Capcom on the horizon.
