Fans of the dystopian action franchise Mad Max can now see the origins of one of its most compelling characters. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga began streaming August 16 on Max, the online streaming service.
The film tells the backstory of Imperator Furiosa, played by Anya Taylor-Joy. In the 2015 film Mad Max: Fury Road, Charlize Theron memorably portrayed Furiosa as a tough, no-nonsense warrior. This prequel delves into Furiosa’s life before the events of Fury Road, showing what experiences turned her into such a fierce leader.
When it premiered in movie theaters in May, Furiosa received positive reviews. Critics praised its spectacular visuals recreating the apocalyptic wasteland setting. However, it only grossed $172 million worldwide against a $168 million budget. This disappointing financial performance has cast doubt on plans for future films in the Mad Max franchise.
The movie reveals how Furiosa was taken from her home as a child. She finds herself controlled by the brutal warlord Dementus, acted by Chris Hemsworth. Thrust into the dangerous post-apocalyptic world, Furiosa battles to survive encounters with Dementus and another notorious ruler, Immortan Joe. These experiences harden her into the resolute commander seen leading the war rig in Fury Road.
Gazettely film critic Owen Gleiberman wrote that Furiosa has a “stop-and-go rhythm” that acknowledges its breathtaking scenery but may not fully satisfy fans. While diehard followers will appreciate learning Furiosa’s backstory, it may not be the definitive success some hoped for in expanding the Mad Max mythos.
Director George Miller signaled openness to more stories, though star Tom Hardy’s comments make future installments uncertain. In the meantime, fans can rediscover the original 1979 Mad Max film or its sequels by streaming them all on Max. As Furiosa’s streaming debut arrives, its performance online could impact plans for this acclaimed franchise going forward.
